Who is this foundation training for?

This Foundation Training in Systemic Practice is designed for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, and other helping professionals who want to develop a systemic framework to inform their clinical work. It is suitable for practitioners working with individuals, couples, families, or groups who are interested in understanding relational patterns, context, and interactional dynamics.

Do I need prior systemic training?

No prior systemic training is required. The course provides a structured introduction to systemic theory and practice, making it suitable for practitioners who are new to systemic ideas as well as those wishing to refresh or formalise their understanding.

Is this training suitable for counsellors and psychotherapists?

Yes. The programme is specifically designed to support professionals including counsellors and psychotherapists to integrate systemic thinking into their existing therapeutic approach. It complements a wide range of modalities by helping practitioners consider relationships, context, and wider systems in their clinical work.

What will I be able to do after the course?

After completing the training, participants will be able to apply systemic concepts and relational thinking in therapeutic practice, recognise patterns of interaction, and develop more context-aware formulations. Practitioners often report increased confidence working with complexity, family dynamics, and multi-person systems within their clinical roles. This course also allows you to apply for the intermediate course in systemic practice and supports people wanting to progress onto the Master's in Systemic Psychotherapy.

How is systemic practice different from family therapy?

Systemic practice is an approach that focuses on relationships, patterns, and context rather than only on individual symptoms. While family therapy is one application of systemic ideas, systemic practice can also be used in individual therapy, organisational settings, and community contexts. The training introduces systemic thinking as a framework that can inform many types of therapeutic work.

What is the time commitment?

The course is delivered on a part-time basis to allow practitioners to continue their clinical work alongside training. It includes 14 taught evenings on a Wednesday, 3 full Saturdays, and independent reading or reflection between sessions. Further details about the schedule are provided on the course information page.

What are the fees and payment options?

Course fees and payment options are outlined on the course information page. Payment plans may be available to support accessibility for practitioners undertaking professional development. Please contact us if you would like to discuss options. The course fee for 2026/27 is £1,950. The fee is significantly lower than other courses due to being the first year of operations, meaning we are likely to achieve accreditation through the Association for Family & Systemic Psychotherapy but this can not be confirmed until the first year of running. Irrespective of accreditation through AFSP, course graduates will achieve a Foundation Certificate in Systemic Practice.

Is there a certificate or CPD recognition?

Participants who complete the course receive a certificate of completion and CPD recognition in systemic practice training. The course supports continuing professional development and contributes towards intermediate and master's level systemic training.

How do I apply?

To apply, please visit the course page and complete the application form. A member of the training team will be in touch to discuss suitability, answer questions, and guide you through the next steps. We limit our intake to 15 students.
